The ever-changing landscape is fringed with silver birch, and oceans of yellow and red leaves produce waves of sound. The wind wrinkles the emerald water of Lake Blanktjärn, and reindeer peek out from between the trees before bounding away. The best word to describe the mountains of Jämtland and Härjedalen, in central Sweden, is 'pristine'.

"To be at one with nature is more or less a lifestyle here," says Linda Wasell of Jämtland Härjedalen Tourism. "This is where we collect our food, do our workout and socialise."

Åsa Lind Chong, owner of Escapade Sweden, a local tour operator, says she specialises in 'rewilding' — helping people reconnect with the great outdoors. And thanks to the region's incredible landscapes, that's not difficult.

There are endless hiking options in the mountains of Jämtland and Härjedalen. And when the land is covered in snow, you can enjoy cross-country and downhill skiing.

As for accommodation, there are plenty of opportunities to camp, as well as many mountain huts run by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF). These tend to be simple, but cosy, with candle-lit rooms and wood-powered heating. Some even have wood-fired saunas — the perfect way to nourish your inner wild child after a day amid the beauty of Jämtland.
