With 7,641 islands strewn through the western Pacific, there are countless stories to be told in the Philippines. Among the most fascinating of these tales is in the Banaue Rice Terraces, stacked into the northern highlands of Luzon. These dramatic landscapes are home to hand-carved rice terraces, which follow the contours of the Cordillera mountains. These wondrous peaks sustain the Ifugao community, who can trace their heritage back 2,000 years. The display of ingenuity by the local people has won admirers all over the world, and trekkers often make the steep journey to reach these terraces to learn about their longstanding heritage of rice-growing.

From the land to the sea — another story can be told in the waters that glisten around the archipelago. Home to the largest concentration of marine species in the world, the Philippines' colourful corals and vast array of aquatic life draw a large number of divers and snorkelers from all over the world. Thrill-seekers are also well catered-for, especially in Siargao. Located in the Mindanao region, the waves here are known to experienced surfers as Cloud Nine, and are considered among the best in the world.
