Experience the wonders of Scandi sand
Sweden might be a surprising beach holiday destination but with its broad swathes of white sands and brightly coloured beach huts, the Swedish Riviera is the perfect place to lay down your beach towel. Marianne Wilschut picks three of the country's best

Ribersborg: Classic city beach
With 1.5 miles of white sand, Malmö's Ribersborg city beach is perfect for lazy summer days. Surf or swim in the shadow of the 10-mile Öresund Bridge, have a sauna or enjoy one of the barbecue sites. Then after lunch, cross the Öresund sound to nearby Copenhagen for a spot of shopping or take a refreshing dip in the beautiful open bath house.
Åhus: Traditional Swedish fishing village
In May, as soon as the rays of the sun are gaining strength, the first intrepid bathers dip their toes in the icy waters off the Täppetstranden in Åhus. This idyllic spot is one of the more popular beaches along Skåne's east coast, thanks to its shallow waters. The long, sandy beach is part of the Ålakusten, Sweden's 'Eel Coast' and the delicacy is served – cooked or smoked – in one of the many hip beach restaurants. Wash it down with a glass of vodka served fresh from the nearby world-famous Absolut distillery.
Skanör-Falsterbo: Brightly coloured beach huts
During the summer, Stockholm's hipsters flock to Skanör-Falsterbo for its exciting cocktails and Sweden's best Italian ice cream and coffee. The dunes along this remarkable peninsula are speckled with brightly coloured beach huts and cool clubs to while away the long summer evenings. During the day you can enjoy simple pursuits like a dip in the crystal-clear sea or soaking up the sun on the white-sand beach – if you look carefully, you could find tiny pieces of amber among the white sands, washed ashore by the sea.
