It's hard to deny the joys of travel; from the novel experiences, thriving in new cultures to discovering hidden gems — universally, it's loved world over. If your travel itch is getting harder to ignore, take a look at our five up-and-coming destinations that deliver untouched natural landscapes, fewer tourists and an authentic touch:

1 Le Marche (pronounced lay-MAR-kay) is perhaps the most scenic region in Italy. Sandwiched halfway down the boot, it remains relatively unknown outside of Italy. Unscathed by mass tourism, Le Marche relies on its reputable insider status to attract travellers from across the world. Getting there won't prove too difficult either. Catch a flight to Ancona airport and from there it's about an hour's drive. Visit the small city of Ascoli Piceno; it has a population of about 50,000 and is noted for its food and trendy art scene. Beach buffs, meanwhile, should head to the coastal area of Portonovo — here, azure seas lap onto silver sands.

Recommended: With a backdrop of the magnificent Sibillini Mountains, Casa Fiastrone is a superb holiday home that's full of comfort, beauty and invigorating views. Sleeps 14, prices from £1,831 per week.

Villa Anisa

2 The Minho, a popular-yet-unsung region of divine inspiration and cultural significance in northern Portugal. The best-known feature in the area is the Rio Minho, which runs about 60 miles from Porto and marks the border with Spain. It's a shoo-in to impress, but Minho's natural beauty doesn't end there. From the mountainous villages, sparkling Atlantic beaches, historic towns and remote villages to the miles of vineyards that line the river, the Vinho Verde (green wine) is more than a grape, it's the essence and flavour of the region.

Recommended: Villa Anisa is a dream. Paddle in your private pool, relax on a sun lounger or sip a glass of wine on the terrace in the late afternoon warmth. Sleeps eight, prices from £1,068 per week.

Acinzogor House

3 Croatia's Dalmatian Coast is the place to go to turn your Mediterranean fantasies into a reality. From the beautiful Game of Thrones landscapes (and tours) and incredible pebble-speckled beaches to the homegrown wine and unforgettable culture, there are loads of reasons why tourists flock to the country year-round. With its legendary sapphire waters, renowned music festivals, knock-out national parks and warm hospitality — it's a hard heart that doesn't fall in love with Croatia at first sight.

Recommended: For hillside views of the shimmering Adriatic, there's no better villa than Acinzogor House. Sleeps eight, prices from £5,308 per week.

Thorpeness House

4 Suffolk can't always guarantee sunshine, but what it lacks in climate it makes up for in landscapes. With its eclectic mix of lush green countryside, moors and rocky mountains, farmland, magical coastlines, quiet villages and busy cities, there really is something for everyone in the UK. And with as many as 39.2 million overseas visitors coming to the UK each year, and staycations becoming increasingly popular, it only seems fair to discover what all the fuss is about for yourself.

Recommended: Thorpeness House has direct access to a shingle beach and is perfect for families. Sleeps 12-16, prices from £3,622 per week.

Kalani Residence

5 Canggu on the south coast of Bali has been a honeypot for generations. In the 1970s, it was famed for its legendary waves and friendly locals, but it's only been in the last few years that Canggu has really been discovered. Full of expats, surrounded by paddy fields and home to a score of beach clubs, it offers the best of both worlds. More of a state of mind, hipsters and beach babes line the colourful beachfront bars and wholefood cafes to enjoy the best of Canggu's offerings. Though much quieter than Seminyak, the island hasn't compromised on nightlife and continues to thrive as the newest tourist hotspot.

Recommended: Kalani Residence is the go-to villa for a restful retreat, and it's just minutes from Canggu. Sleeps 18, prices from £6,979 per week.
