Founded in February 2006, Norðurflug Helicopter Tours is the largest and oldest helicopter company in Iceland. Based in the capital, Reykjavik, Norðurflug offers tours all over the island. Private tours are ideal for two to eight people, while larger groups can be catered for with tailor-made tours.

Run by a husband-and-wife team, Norðurflug has grown quickly in recent years but remains a small company at heart, with staff often referring to themselves as a family. The Norðurflug team includes some of the most experienced and skilled pilots in the private sector, who are often sought after by international production teams; they’ve worked on films such as The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Noah.

The pilots are from all over the world: seeing the sights of Iceland through foreign eyes often gives a better sense of what amazes customers the most.

Norðurflug operates a range of tours including sightseeing and photo tours, glacier and volcano trips, and seasonal heli-skiing in the north of the country. Norðurflug’s Reykjavik Summit tour, for example, provides an exploration of the vibrant cityscape and surrounding mountains. The helicopter also lands on a nearby summit, giving passengers the chance to take some incredible photos of the silent panorama: the vast blue ocean hugging the city shore, with several small islands scattered in the distance. Another option is the Geothermal Tour, which takes in one of the most active geothermal areas in Iceland, the Hellisheiði plateau. Fly over moss-covered lava fields interspersed with colourful basalt mountains, steaming hot springs and the geothermal power plants that supply Reykjavik’s renewable energy. Landing in the Hengill geothermal area, witness untouched nature and get up close to boiling mud pools; no matter what time of year, this area always brings magical, colourful views.

Norðurflug has operated during recent volcanic eruptions (starting with the infamous Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010), and they have been chosen to fly respected scientists and geologists, giving the team even more knowledge of the country that they’re passionate about sharing with their customers.
