The UK’s national parks are natural treasures and cultural cornerstones, and this year they’re turning 70

There’s good reason to get out and explore the UK’s 15 national parks this month: to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the passing of the Act of Parliament that led to their creation. To encourage visitors to explore the nation’s green lungs, Discover National Parks Fortnight (6-21 April) is highlighting all the family-friendly outdoor events on offer, from treasure trails to Segway safaris. And if you need further inspiration, take a look at these spectacular entries in the UK National Parks’ celebratory photography competition. Almost 1,500 snappers entered, with Kieran Metcalfe’s moody, misty shot of Derbyshire’s Parkhouse Hill, in the Peak District National Park, clinching first prize.
