Northern Lights over Finnish Lapland

The experience
Home to around 200,000 reindeer and 180,000 people as well as six national parks, Finnish Lapland is a true off-grid wilderness with minimal light pollution. The trip on offer is based in Inari, high above the Arctic Circle; a region with an exceptional record for glimpsing the Northern Lights. Inari is a small lakeside village within Finnish Lapland’s natural playground and home to the indigenous Sámi culture. Each autumn, the leaves turn a vibrant gold and the locals call this peak of autumn colour ‘ruska’.

Autumn is a particularly special time to visit for aurora hunting with its clear night skies and unfrozen lakes, meaning there’s a good chance to see the ethereal lights reflected on water. Scientific research also confirms that the weeks around the annual autumn equinox in September are often the best time for observing the aurora. This is due to increased geomagnetic activity darkening skies in the auroral zone coupled with reduced cloud cover.

Accommodation is at the lakeside Wilderness Hotel Inari which is a stylish and contemporary property offering a variety of hotel room accommodation, aurora cabins and cosy log cabins. Delicious seasonal cuisine is served in the restaurant and guests can relax beside roaring log fires or warm up in the glass-roofed sauna.
