By National Geographic Traveller (UK)

Stretching all the way from Russia in the north to Indonesia's Pamana Island in the south, Asia is the world's largest and most populous continent, and perhaps its most varied. With so many sprawling countries, this is a place that lends itself to long, leisurely exploration, whether it’s riding the rails in India, or island-hopping around Indonesia. Southeast Asia has long been a travellers' favourite for its combination of temples, treks and beaches, while the Middle East ranges from the gloss and glamour of the UAE to countries such as Jordan, which are laden with ancient sites. You’ll also find some of the world’s tallest peaks here — Everest being chief among them — as the Himalayas spread across five countries including Nepal. Neighbouring China, meanwhile, is home to more than 1.4 billion of the continent's 4.5 billion residents, as well as a host of attractions, from the Terracotta Warriors to the Great Wall of China.
