More Than 150 Whales Fled the Sea. Why?
Why did 150 short-finned pilot whales end up stranded on this beach in southwestern Australia? According to reports, 130 had already died by mid-day while only a few remained alive. Vets and volunteers worked together to keep the surviving whales alive.
Whales travel in close-knit pods. Researchers theorise that a dominant whale may have led the pod astray - perhaps chasing prey onto shore while the rest followed its lead. Other theories suggest human sonar can disorient whales and other cetaceans.
