Rare Baby Sun Bear Born to Rescued Parents at UK Zoo

This is Milli, a sun bear, and her new cub that was born at the UK’s Chester Zoo. Milli will tend to her cub in their den for about two months before they venture out together. Milli and the cub’s father, Toni, were rescued from poachers in Cambodia after being kept as mistreated pets.

Successful captive sun bear births are rare and the species are the smallest bear species—half the size of American black bears – and are also called honey bears, because they use their long tongues to scoop up insects and honey. Sun bear populations in Southeast Asia are rapidly declining due to hunting, habitat loss, and the illegal pet trade.
