Q Where would you recommend for a sunny, long-haul week's half-term holiday that's not too pricey?

Andrew Brown, Post Office Travel Money: Phuket in Thailand has been one of the cheapest resorts in the Post Office pricing surveys we run to find destinations that offer the best value. Prices for meals are inexpensive and other tourist staples are cheaper than in many other long-haul resorts. Our latest half-term barometer, which calculated the cost of packages and spending in resorts, found a week in Phuket was more than £700 cheaper for a family of four than a week in Lanzarote.

Now sterling is worth significantly less than it was a year ago, do your homework before booking and factor in the likely costs. Don't just go for the cheapest package. Once you multiply the cost of meals and drinks, this can add hundreds of pounds to the budget.

If you book in February, note that Thailand will be in the middle of a year's mourning after King Bhumibol's death, with restricted hours at some bars and businesses. Although this is unlikely to affect holidays on Phuket, it would be wise to be aware.
