Beautifully situated between mountain and ocean on the southern tip of Africa, Grootbos offers the perfect nature retreat in a vast, unsullied wilderness. Its private reserve is a glistening jewel in the crown of the Cape Floristic Region.

The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and plays host to an astonishing 700 species of fynbos (shrubland) as well as a diverse array of marine life. Its name means ‘big forest’ in Afrikaans and refers to the indigenous and endangered milkwood forests, filled with trees that are over a thousand years old and otherworldly in their knotted, gnarled beauty.

Hidden away in this fairytale woodland lies Grootbos, a sumptuous five-star resort offering award-winning accommodation: it was named as one of 15 finalists for National Geographic’s 2016 World Legacy Awards and nominated as the leading luxury lodge for the World Travel Awards in the same year.

Immersed in pristine natural surroundings, Grootbos offers complete privacy in elegant, stylishly furnished suites. The villa includes six suites and comes with a private butler, chef and tour guide.

Guided adventures keep guests fully entertained, with options ranging from whale-watching and cage diving with sharks to walks and safaris. More high-adrenalin options include quad biking and scenic flights.

After a hard day’s hiking, guests can indulge in a blissful, rejuvenating treatment either in the comfort of a suite or in a choice of two spas. Towering ebony trees and emerald foliage surround the Forest Spa, immersing guests in the replenishing energy of nature. From shiatsu to full facials, there’s a pampering treatment option for everyone, each using only the finest natural products.

Come nightfall, visitors can wine and dine in an exquisite setting, enjoying the finest in contemporary cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients. Or for something a little different, guests can take dinner by the boma (firepit) or go for picnics on the beach.
