Rome has existed for more than 2,000 years, although there’s archaeological evidence of human occupation in the area going back at least 5,000 years — it’s no surprise, therefore, that the streets of Rome are steeped in history.

Nearly 50 million people from all over the world visit Italy each year, and a large proportion of them make a stay in the country’s capital a highlight of their trip. To cater to this growing market, and to offer something a little different, Unconventional Rome Tours was founded. The company is passionate about creating meaningful experiences for travellers, and draws on many years of experience to ensure they deliver memorable, informative and entertaining days out for visitors to this fascinating city.

The company’s varied itineraries are available in numerous languages and are perfect for visitors who want to explore the most beautiful parts of Rome and the Vatican City. The tours delve into the city’s marvellous mysteries, and organisers use their carefully cultivated contacts to guarantee priority access.

Visitors are given the chance to experience the Eternal City in a different way — by travelling back in time. Travellers, accompanied by a qualified guide, visit some of the city’s most fascinating sites such as the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon and Navona Square. Here, they will meet some of its most important historical figures, including Julius Caesar, Michelangelo and the Borgias, all brought to life by actors in costume, with scenes acted out in English.

Highlights include ‘meeting’ the artist Caravaggio as he takes part in a duel and visiting the Catacombs of Priscilla — which visitors get to do outside of regular visiting hours. Here they meet martyrs, Roman soldiers and saints: characters that accompany them into the past and allow them to bear witness to the souls’ passage to the afterlife.

Tours available to visitors include The Best of Rome, The Catacombs of Rome and The Borgias, which last a couple of hours each and are presented by a cast of actors.
