Cantering with zebras across the savannah, galloping across the desert sands or weaving your way through swaying pampas grass: there’s no better way to explore a country than from the back of a horse, on an adventure handpicked by the Riding Safari Association. To qualify as a member, a riding company must score high on quality, reputation and safety. No two rides are alike: whether you are a novice rider, a proficient rider or part of a mixed-ability group.

Experienced riders can cross Kenya’s Maasai Mara on horseback with Safaris Unlimited, discovering gorges and valleys, crossing endless plains and dramatic rivers and encountering everything from zebras to elephants and giraffe.  From July to October travellers could also bear witness to the epic wildebeest migration.

The wild, desert landscapes of Namibia are unique and haunting, particularly when experienced on horseback with Namibia Horse Safari Company. From the dramatic volcanic landforms of Damaraland to the great plains of the Namib Desert and surprising biodiversity of the Fish River Canyon, Namibia offers a bouquet of superb landscapes to explore.

In Botswana, adventurous types should look no further than Limpopo Horse Safaris where riders traverse baobab studded plains home to large herds of elephant and a variety of other wildlife including cheetah. Highlights include a night in an old tribal court under a star-lit sky.

South Africa’s Horizon Horseback Adventures offers a selection of horses suitable for all ability levels. Journeying through the savannah, riders may pass grazing giraffes or hippos basking in water holes, and even join herds of zebra and antelope. Intrepid types are spoilt for choice, with swimming on horseback and polocrosse on offer.

Further afield in South America, fabulous pampas riding, wine tastings and refreshing dips in waterfalls within the rolling hills of the Sierra Chicas of Argentina are available from Estancia Los Potreros. You can also release your inner gaucho around the cattle, try your hand at polo or challenge the gauchos to traditional games
on horseback.
