There’s no shortage of beautiful islands to visit around the world. However, if you’re after unspoilt beauty that goes hand-in-hand with a wide variety of wildlife, then Tobago is the destination for you. Tobago is the smaller of the twin island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago and offers visitors a taste of paradise

Location

Tobago is only 25 miles long by nine miles wide, and has a population of just 60,000 people, yet it contains a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna, pristine beaches and a wide variety of species of birds and turtles for the discerning tourist.

Part of its charm also lies in the fact that it has one of the oldest protected rainforests in the western hemisphere. Bacolet Beach Club is one of the island’s premier hotels and it captures Tobago’s authentic culture and style.

The resort

Breathtaking is an understatement for this luxurious Tobagonian hideaway, which is owned by former fashion model Gloria Jones. This exclusive resort is built on a stunning 4.5-acre beachfront property, dotted with lush coconut and almond groves.

Nestled into the beautifully secluded Bacolet Bay, the suites offer stunning panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. This delightful club is committed to providing guests with luxury and personal service. Its intimate size encourages a particularly warm and family-friendly atmosphere, which has been fostered by its owner’s years of travel experience strutting the international catwalks across Europe.

Accommodation

The resort’s 50 ocean-front suites have been styled to reflect a cross-cultural aesthetic; Asian-inspired silk elements blend nicely with curlicued pieces and modernist fixtures in a chic manner. Throughout the rooms, the balance with nature is very evident. The airy interiors are filled with luxurious details, such as delicately beaded lamps and grand, silk-covered chaise lounges. The bathrooms too, are beautiful, marbled in their entirety from floor to ceiling.

Dining

Step outside the ocean-fronted suites and The Rok bar is located right on the beach. Staff serve up delicious cold drinks and offer out complimentary lounge chairs and towels for guests, further adding to the luxurious and relaxing vibe that encompasses the resort.

Activities for everyone

For an enchanting outing, guests can buckle up and take the wheel of a rental vehicle. This unique experience takes travellers along the island’s most scenic routes. Cruise down the windward side of Tobago admiring the Atlantic coastline, visiting the towns of Castara and Parlatuvier, as well as smaller fishing villages, until reaching Speyside.

Or, for a more laid-back approach, guests can book the Jungle Fever tour, which includes sightseeing along the Atlantic and Caribbean coastlines. From lush rainforest to the stunning Bloody Bay, Englishman’s Bay and Pirates’ Bay, refreshing waterfalls and historical forts, take in some of the most breathtaking views the Caribbean has to offer, soak in the atmosphere, and experience Tobago at its very best.

A glass-bottom boat provides transport to Little Tobago Island (note: the fee has to be paid directly to the captain), viewing all manner of marine life, including parrotfish and queen angels, along the way. Little Tobago is a haven for rare birds including the red-billed tropicbird, magnificent frigate birds, shearwater and red-footed boobies. Or, snorkel off Goat Island, the best reef in Tobago, and home to the world’s largest brain coral.

With more than 50 species of reef fish, manta rays and turtles, the island will surprise everyone. No matter which adventure guests choose, they’ll be sure to create lifelong memories.

RELAX and Indulge

Café Havana also adds to the romance of Bacolet. Reached by a bridge bathed in the soft wash of lighting over a ravine, the restaurant’s open verandahs are enhanced by reclaimed green heart wooden floors and high ceilings extending over three levels.

Creating a comfortable and tranquil surrounding is the idea here and it’s perfect for relaxing in the sultry tropical nights and enjoying the panoramic views over the beautiful gardens. Serving up Cuban-inspired cuisine as well as the catch of the day, guests can wash their food down with a selection of international cocktails.

Cool down by taking a midnight swim in the two turquoise infinity pools, where sky, ocean and pool all seem to blend into one. Walk hand-in-hand on the secluded bay watching the sun set or have a private dinner on the honeymoon deck, watching the magical dance of the fireflies while sipping chilled champagne.

Unlike the crowded, all-inclusive resorts on the Atlantic side of the island, this low-key boutique property feels like a secret Caribbean hideaway.

Only 15 miles from Crown Point International Airport and a mile from Scarborough, Tobago’s capital, Bacolet Beach Club is perfectly situated off the beaten path but conveniently located just a short drive to the many attractions of the island, including Pigeon Point, Buccoo Reef, Botanical Gardens, historical Fort George, Argyle Waterfall, Rainforest and Little Tobago.
