A man stands in the shade of the 400-year-old Prosopis cineraria tree, known famously as the “tree of life.” It is also Bahrain’s loneliest tree, as it stands alone, with no other tree in sight on a barren hillside about 15 miles south of Bahrain’s capital city, Manama. It survives because its tap root can reach into groundwater 115 feet beneath the surface.
