Sir Ernest Shackleton led the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition that attempted to be the first to cross Antarctica. As their ship the Endurance neared the continent, it became fast bound in sea ice. The floes crushed the hull, and the crew took to the ice, where they drifted for months. Once conditions allowed, Shackleton and a small group sailed one of the ship’s boats across the Scotia Sea to look for rescue.

Aldrin, photographed at National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., believes that within two decades America will lead international crews to land on Mars.
