Researcher Alessandra Mascaro observes Rekambo chimpanzees in the savanna.
Chimpanzees (pictured, a male named Cesar) eat a wide range of foods, including fruits, nuts, seeds, and insects. The Rekambo chimpanzees’ territory of about 23 square miles includes almost all habitats of the national park, from the beach to the savanna to the rainforest.
Scientists haven't yet identified the species of insect or insects the chimps harvest to treat their wounds.
He then takes the insect out of his mouth and gently applies it to an open wound sustained during a fight.
