Why are we as photographers drawn to raise our cameras to document a certain scene? Is it the idea that we want to capture a moment that may never happen again? I had these questions in my head while watching a band perform in Washington, D.C. The light show and the energy the musicians brought to the stage were moments I knew I needed to photograph.

The following selection of images—this week’s best submissions to Your Shot—feature moments that I believe the photographers needed to capture. Whether it was to document the process of plants being loaded onto on a semi, as captured by Tracy Walsh; a boxer listening to the instructions from his trainer as he prepared for the next round of a fight, documented by Micky Kalita; or a women stopping to photograph some cherry trees, taken by Lester Lau, these were all moments in time that these photographers felt they had to raise their cameras to capture.

National Geographic’s Your Shot photo community is filled with scenes such as these from photographers all over the world. We’re on our way to having over 10 million images shared on the platform. If you have recently captured a moment you felt needed to be documented, please share it with us today.

Senior Producer Matt Adams manages the editorial direction of Your Shot, this week he shares his favorite recent uploads from the photo community.
