Amakoro Songa Lodge

Nestled in a small village outside the town of Kinigi, a 10-minute drive from the gorilla trekking office, Amakoro Songa Lodge offers a blend of conservation and tourism. Its eight luxurious cottages are designed to take advantage of the serene surroundings, giving visitors a sense of being at peace, far away from everything.

Amakoro Lodge takes its name from the black volcanic rocks that characterise this mountainous part of Rwanda, home to mountain gorillas. The lodge is set on seven acres of land with beautifully manicured lawns, surrounded by the mountain volcanoes Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo.

All the cottages at Amakoro Lodge have a rustic elegance. Their rooms are spacious and tastefully furnished using a fusion of local and modern pieces to create a comfortable setting. After a tiring day of trekking, guests can retire to their cottage for a much-needed massage. One of the highlights of a stay at the lodge is the outside fireplace, where guests can enjoy an evening drink while watching the traditional Intore Dance Troupe.

The food served at Amakoro leans heavily on local culinary traditions. The chefs grow their own spices and vegetables in the gardens and cater for all palates. The carefully recruited staff include people from the local community whose knowledge of the surrounding area is unrivalled.

Guests can visit nearby villages and take part in activities like tree planting and traditional dancing. The lodge organises community walks that include home visits and a ‘story moment’ with the oldest resident, and the community walks always end with a picnic and a moment of contemplation for guests to enjoy nature.

The main activity here is gorilla trekking. Amakoro Lodge is the closest lodge to the park headquarters, where the adventure into Rwanda’s forests begins. A reinvigorating foot massage awaits guests after what’s sure to be an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience. Other activities include mountain climbing, cycling and birdwatching. However, for guests looking for relaxation and rediscovering their inner self, Amakoro Songa Lodge is the place to be.
