01 The Drake
No need to go out, Toronto comes to you at this boho pad on West Queen Street, whether it's bands in the basement or art and cocktails on the roof. You'll find glasses of fizz, bags of popcorn and super-chic decor in the 19 rooms: Crash Pads are small, Dens are larger, and the rooms at the top are the quietest. Whatever you do, don't miss the weekend brunch. Doubles from £100.

02 Baldwin Village Inn
Book into this impossibly cosy B&B set amidst restaurants, bakeries and grocery stores, and bed down in one of the six homely rooms with three shared bathrooms. There's air con, free wi-fi, a book-lined sitting room and patio. Fix your own meals in the guest kitchen or stroll into Chinatown. For a private bathroom, go for its stylish sister 'inn' on Sullivan Street. Doubles from £57.

03 Gladstone Hotel
Cool, comfortable and in Toronto's creative quarter, each of the 37 rooms at the Gladstone are design-led; take your pick from 'Teen Queen', 'Twilight' and 'Chinoiserie'. Includes free wi-fi, large beds, small showers and Samsung tablets. There's free coffee each morning, the lively cafe mixes up some legendary cocktails, and you can tick off 'culture' by visiting the three art galleries on site. Doubles from £100.

04 Smiley's B&B
Wake up to the sound of birdsong on Algonquin Island, a 15-minute ferry hop from Toronto's harbour. This charming pad is small, spotless and surrounded by trees — there are two bikes and a canoe you can borrow, a cosy room with a snug bed, and amazing pancakes for breakfast. The independent studio has a futon downstairs, a double in the loft and a BBQ outside. Kids will love Timmy the dog. From £60 for two.
