Your picture will look more balanced if any movement — whether it's actual motion, or the way someone is looking — is directed into the frame, not out of it. The simple way to do this is to leave more space in front of your subject than behind it. This will create the impression that there's space to move into or look into. Although many of the rules of composition should be broken regularly for creative effect, this is one that is worth remembering.
