Economic uncertainty and austerity be damned. Hard financial times, says British adventurer and author, Alistair Humphreys, are precisely when we should be stepping into the wild and reinvigorating our lust for life. But how to do it? This book aims to tackle not just the wheres and whys of adventure travel, but also the scary, seemingly impossible obstacles that stop us from planning life-changing adventures in the first place.

There are chapters on how to save and manage your pennies — and your time. There are some tough lessons on navigating personal relationships, along with very detailed 'how to' sections on planning and packing.

Humphreys, who devised the popular Microadventures, has managed to extract words of hard-won wisdom from ordinary people who've had extraordinary adventures — along with expert tips from astronauts, long-distance cyclists, Arctic explorers, and more. There are glossy images to inspire, but this is not so much a bucket list of must-have adventures — although there are plenty of those to choose from, from biking to climbing, wildlife watching to itineraries for petrol-heads — as it is an awe-inspiring catalogue of the mental things people do
for fun. As one prominent reviewer, a Major General GJ Binns, CBE DSO MC, wrote of Humphreys: "I feel proud that our nation still produces nutters like you."
