Home shores

On foot

Where: Ireland
What: The mighty, magnificent Wild Atlantic Way twists and turns for 1,600 miles along the rugged Irish coast as it threads through eight counties. This epic coastal path can be tackled in 14 stages and calls at some of the Emerald Isle's most spectacular sites. Don't miss the epic Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, a rugged final frontier onto the Atlantic.

Two wheels

Where: Lake District
What: The timeless beauty of Wordsworth Country has trails for cyclists of all abilities. The fells rippling across Cumbria are challenging for any cyclist; this area is home to England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, after all. But the views make it all worthwhile, and sleepy villages and lakeside country lanes are a welcome respite for throbbing thighs.

Where: Pembrokeshire
What: The spindly peninsulas of southwest Wales are perfect for coasteering — an adrenalin-fuelled escapade that combines swimming, climbing and jumping into the sea. Pembrokeshire's craggy cliffs and coves make it one of the best spots in the UK for some unaided exploration — from sea caves and dramatic arches to quiet beaches and pretty hiking paths.

Further afield

On foot

Where: Italy
What: Running like a jagged, picturesque spine through northeastern Italy, the Dolomites are every inch the alpine idyll. Their lofty peaks attract skiers in the winter, but the summer offers adventurers serious high-altitude hiking. Numerous trails weave across the mountains of Trentino and many routes are designed as multi-day hikes with regional fare along the way.

Two wheels

Where: Morocco
What: Morocco's landscape switches from the dramatic summits of the Atlas Mountains down to sun-drenched Atlantic beaches, strewn with beguiling cities, and off-the-beaten-track Berber camps. Morocco Immersion offers a five-day Mountain Bike Tour that crosses the desert of Ait Youl towards the Dades Valley. From £,1215 per person.

Where: Portugal
What: Kissed by Atlantic winds, it's no surprise Portugal offers some of the best surf in Europe. Dotted along its coast from north to south is a rich offering of offbeat, beachy hangouts, but laid-back Peniche (just an hour north of Lisbon) is the shining star of the country's surfing scene, with near-perfect conditions every day, plus plenty of surf schools and lodges for making the most of these world-class waves.

On foot

Where: Patagonia, Chile/Argentina
What: Mother Nature was feeling generous when she created Patagonia
— two mighty coastlines, glaciers, pampas and sharp, jagged mountains towering over pristine lakes. Discovering this vast region on foot is an experience like no other and the rewards —picture-perfect vistas, crisp mountain air and a true sense of adventure — come in spades.

Two wheels

Where: Kerala, India
What: Nicknamed 'God's Own Country', Kerala's beaches and backwaters ease on at a gentle pace; a welcome tonic to the region's raucous, vibrant cities. Active India Holidays offers a 12-day Cycling Tour of Kerala that include the beaches of Kovalam, the unspoiled village of Varkala and the wildlife ofPeriyar National Park. From £1,995 per person based on double occupancy.

Where: Belize
What: Wedged beneath Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, the exotic climes of Belize pack a punch when it comes to underwater offerings. Hailed as one of the world's best diving spots, the sheer breadth of the country's marine life is staggering. Divers can glimpse everything from parrotfish and eagle rays to turtles and nurse sharks — not surprising given the Belize Barrier Reef is the world's second largest at nearly 190 miles long .
