Locals Use Digger to Rescue Stranded Elephant

Tuesday, 20 March

This elephant calf got stuck in a pit just outside a forested area in Karnataka, India. The distressed pachyderm stumbled into the pit the night before. Residents from the town nearby discovered the animal the next morning ... alerted by its trumpeting calls.

The elephant had collapsed from exhaustion while trying to climb out of the pit. The townspeople brought a digger to give it a helping hand to get out. With the help of some heavy machinery and a little creativity, the elephant was freed and went on its way.
