This Tiny Aquatic Mammal Has a Snorkel Snout

Big things can come in small packages. This is a Pyrenean desman, a nocturnal insectivore mammal found in Spain and north Portugal. The tiny aquatic animal uses its long snout as a snorkel while hunting for insect prey.

The desman is the 8,000th animal photographed for National Geographic Photo Ark. Photographer Joel Sartore aims to take portraits of all species in captivity, to support conservation of even the smallest of animals
