Time-lapse images captured the 24-hour hatching of a Caribbean flamingo chick at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The hatchling is part of the zoo’s conservation programme. To protect the eggs from predators, keepers remove them from their nests and place them in incubators.

In about 28 days, when they start hatching, the eggs are placed in this hatcher. This is the smallest hatchling, weighing in at three ounces. Vets will monitor the chick’s health and it will be hand raised by the zoo’s animal care team. The chick’s sex will be determined in about a week, after a DNA analysis.
